This custom 54cm Surly Cross-Check has lived a couple of excellent lives as a fixed gear commuter, and as a touring bike. I’m thinning my fleet down before I move to OR and it needs a new home. I’m 6′ and this set-up fits me perfectly, but someone shorter could enjoy this bike if they put the seat down a bit and got a shorter stem. I’ve found this frame to be very comfortable for long-rides, but it is not sluggish and it’s truly fun to ride (read: real tite). I once hit 51mph on this beast on a tour. It was once wild. Come live the dream.
The rad forest green steel frame has some surface rust and scratches on the down-tube and dropouts from regular commuting (see image of bottom of down tube). The frame has no no dents, and it’s ready be ridden well into the future. The drivetrain and wheels have solid mountain bike components that I put on specifically for long-distance touring, and a triple front derailleur so you’ll basically ride up anything fully loaded — imagine me, I tested this in San Francisco. Both wheels are hand-built — the front wheel has about 2,000 miles on it, and the rear has about 1,000. I just cleaned the bike up and put a new linear pull brake set, new platform pedals, new front derailleur, new brake levers, new bar tape, and a new chain on it. It’s ready to ride! ** Bike is as pictured aside from for newly installed rear derailleur (listed below)
If you have an interest in setting this bike up for touring I will put a Tubus Tara Lowrider Front Pannier Rack on it for an additional $60 (msrp: $119.99). I also have front and rear Ortlieb Plus panniers in excellent condition that I would be willing to part with for the right price as well.
